It could be a beautiful evening if the air remains smoke-free. But living in North St. Paul, MN, the most polluted city in the world, that is not likely.
6:00 PM: No wood or yard waste smoke yet. Enjoying that fresh air! Going to sit outside for a while until the wood smoke starts. And it will. It's always smoky in North St. Paul. 76 degrees, cloudy. Rain is in the forecast for later this evening.
7:00 PM: No smoke.
7:50 PM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is in the air.
8:05 PM: Very faint grass smoke. There is someone illegally burning grass in the distance. It's not very strong but it is enough to smell it inside the house.
8:25 PM: Very faint grass smoke continues.
9:00 PM: No smoke.
10:10 PM: No smoke. Fresh air. No rain yet.
Midnight: No wood smoke. Fresh air! No rain yet.
I was surprised that all we had for smoky air tonight was a tiny bit of grass smoke around the 8 PM hour. What possible reason could there be for the absence of wood smoke tonight? Is it because it was forecast to rain this evening? No. There was rain in the forecast for last Friday evening and it did not discourage the burning. Could it be the wind pattern? The wind is out of the east and north this evening, different from the usual west to east pattern. But we get hit with wood smoke no matter which way the wind blows. Maybe we just got lucky. That happens once every blue moon in North St. Paul.
You have to savor every little bit of fresh air you get in this polluted nightmare of a city.
