Monday 07/27/2009 Air Pollution

9:00 PM: Light wood smoke.

9:30 PM: Faint wood smoke. Going to bed.

The air was smoky around 6 PM. It smelled more like grilling than wood. But it was hard to tell what it was really. I don't complain about smoke from charcoal or propane grills. Grilling food does not take long. Smoke from grilling meat is not a nuisance like wood smoke, but I wouldn't want to smell it for 10 hours a day like we often do with wood smoke. It's the one or two people who grill with wood as a primary fuel that concern me. The wood smolders for hours after the grilling has been finished, smoking up the entire block. One guy grills with wood for half-an-hour but his wood smolders for three hours or longer. After his wood finishes smoldering is when the recreational bonfires usually start. That makes for a long, smoky evening.
