WELCOME TO HELL ON EARTH

The air is smoky from burning wood in North St. Paul, MN, almost every evening. It is a nightmare. What used to be a nice place to live has become a living hell.

WARNING: If you buy a house in North St. Paul, MN, you will regret it! It may be the biggest, most expensive mistake you ever make. You will breathe smoky air almost every day of your life in this town. This is not an exaggeration. The wood smoke in this town gets heavy and gets heavy often. When you want to get out of this dump of a town, how many people do you think are going to want to buy a house in a city where heavy air pollution every night is normal and clean air is rare? This blog gets thousands of visitors every year. The word is out: North St. Paul is a horrible place to live!

Fresh air is very rare around here. If you are considering moving to North St. Paul or buying a home here, I strongly recommend that you do not do it no matter how good of a price you get. The only way you will be happy in this town is if you love breathing smoky air almost every day. North St. Paul, MN, is a horrible place to live because of the smoky air!

Burning wood, grass, leaves, paper, cardboard, and sometimes plastic, construction materials, and chemicals, if it is combustible it gets burned in North St. Paul and you are going to breathe it.

The air was smoky 25 out of 31 evenings in July 2009. We had 37 hours of continuous wood smoke in the air Aug. 29th - 31st. There was wood smoke in the air 19 consecutive evenings from Aug. 21st to Sept. 8th. It rained heavily on Aug. 20th, providing the only relief we got from wood smoke for almost three weeks.

Is this a good way to live? No. It is a horrible way to live. Take it from someone who knows. Breathing smoky, polluted air every day is misery.

Every day in this city several people are having recreational fires. Every evening the air is filled with the stench of burning wood. I am one person sick and tired of breathing smoky air every day. Is it too much to ask to be able to breathe fresh air in your own home?

Who is responsible for this wood smoke nightmare? The four city council members are responsible. Council members Jan Walczak, Bob Bruton, Terry Furlong, and Dave Zick have refused to do anything about this wood smoke problem. They don't care if you have a child with asthma. They don't care if you have to live like a shut-in because the air is so polluted. They don't care if your sinuses burn because the wood smoke is so heavy.

Our four Council members have defended the rights of a small percentage of households to burn wood daily over the rights of all the rest of us to breathe.

You have no right to breathe under Walczak, Bruton, Furlong, and Zick. Burners have the right to burn wood 49 hours a week recreationally. The rest of us have no rights at all.

If you are considering purchasing real estate in the city of North Saint Paul, Minnesota (55109), factor this blog carefully into your decision. Buying a home in this city means that your kids will breathe smoky air while playing in the yard almost every day. Your baby will breathe smoky air in her crib should you leave the windows open around your house. If you leave your windows open you will wake up in the middle of the night choking on smoky air.

Perhaps worst of all, your utility rates will be high because you will have to run the air conditioner instead of leaving the windows open on a cool summer evening. You have no other choice because almost every night the air is too smoky to breathe in this city. Consider this blog your warning.

North St. Paul, Minnesota, is a wonderful community other than the wood smoke. If we could restore fresh air like we used to enjoy, life would be happy again. But that is not going to happen any time soon.

Tell others about this blog!

Sunday 06/26/2011 Air Pollution

1:55 PM: A very faint trace of grass smoke is in the air. I could smell it coming in the window as I was taking care of the dishes. It did not last long.

3:45 PM: Very faint grass smoke at this time from a distant illegal yard waste burner.

4:05 PM: No smoke at this time. Fresh air.

4:40 PM: Very faint grass smoke is in the air.

5:15 PM: Fresh air for the time being.

5:30 PM: Faint grass smoke. Is it the same yard waste burner as earlier or a new one? Would somebody spend all afternoon illegally burning grass in small amounts or would they get all the burning done at once? In this screwy city you never can tell.

6:05 PM: A very faint wood or grass smoke is in the air at this time. 79 degrees, cloudy. It looks like it could rain but the rain is not forecast to come until later. The grass smoke comes and goes. I can smell it coming through the windows into the house. It isn't enough to close the windows as long as we get it in small amounts.

There is a chance of rain and thunderstorms late in the evening. It does not look like it will rain early enough to prevent the normal nightly burning in North Saint Paul, Minnesota. It looks like we will have smoky air again tonight.

7:00 PM: I cannot read my note for this time.

8:00 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke is in the air at this time.

9:15 PM: No smoke.

9:35 PM: Faint wood smoke at this time. Wouldn't you know it.

11:00 PM: The air is not fresh at this time but I cannot detect what is in it.

Saturday 06/25/2011 Air Pollution

Last evening's burning continued well into the morning hours. We may have a few hours of fresh air until the yard waste burning starts then the wood smoke nightmare starts all over again. Tonight will be a smoky hell as Saturdays always are.

1:00 AM: Light to moderate smoldering wood smoke continues. There is no breeze to push the smoke away. It blankets the area. No chance to open the windows yet.

3:15 AM: Light to moderate wood smoke continues. Still can't open the windows and get some air in the house.

5:00 AM: A faint to light smoldering smokiness lingers in the air. The windows cannot be opened yet.

7:00 AM: The air is mostly clear. Finally we can open the windows! NORTH SAINT PAUL SUCKS! HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE!

As usual, it was a smoky night in North St. Paul. It wasn't as smoky as last night. But it was too smoky to sit outside or open the windows. Prisoners in our own home once again. I did not notice any yard waste burning today. I was in and out much of the afternoon and may have missed it.

6:00 PM: No smoke yet. 68 degrees, cloudy.

7:00 PM: A faint wood smoke was in the air for a few minutes. The breeze must have shifted.

8:00 PM: Light to moderate wood smoke at this time. It's pretty smoky outside.

8:40 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke is in the air now.

9:00 PM: Faint wood smoke.

9:40 PM: Light wood smoke.

10:00 PM: Light wood smoke. I walked down the street upwind toward the source of the smoke. Nobody on our block is burning. I don't know where it is coming from. It could be another block away or even farther than that.

10:45 PM: Light wood smoke.

11:20 PM: Very faint wood smoke.

Midnight: The air is mostly clear but a trace of smoke lingers. The air is not fresh at this time. We cannot risk opening the windows tonight. Somebody could start a late bonfire or the wind may shift filling the house with smoky air.

There was no more smoke tonight. I woke a few times before sunrise and the air was mostly clear each time. The air was clear when we woke except for a trace of a burnt wood odor. It was barely noticeable, not enough to prevent the windows from being opened to let in the cool morning air.

Friday 06/24/2011 Air Pollution

It is a nice day in North St. Paul. Everyone has their air conditioners off and their windows open. That means tonight is going to be a brutal, smoky hell! As it always is. This is normal in North St. Paul, MN. All the bonfires and yard waste burning that would have normally taken place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will happen tonight and tomorrow. We will have five days of wood and yard waste smoke pollution compressed into two.

5:00 PM: No smoke. Fresh air for the time being. Completely cloudy. 76 degrees with the relative humidity level at a comfortable 35%. The weather forecast calls for the possibility of a passing sprinkle this evening in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area but no rain in any amount to discourage bonfire smoke pollution.

5:20 PM: Light wood smoke varying with the breeze. The burning has already started. There is no cooking odor with the wood smoke. It is just wood being burned. I believe I know who is doing it but I am not driving around the block to be certain. Close the windows! North St. Paul sucks!

5:40 PM: Light to moderate wood smoke at this time.

5:50 PM: No smoke at this time. The wind shifted.

6:15 PM: Light smoke at this time. The burner will leave the wood to smolder itself out as he always does. It is going to be smoky for hours. It will probably be three or more hours until the wood burns itself out. It will be getting dark by that time then the bonfires start and it will be even smokier than it is now. My sinuses are starting to get irritated from the smoke already.

Do you want to live in a city like this? Maybe by morning we will be able to open the windows. The past two weekends have featured smoldering wood smoke in the morning. This is how you are going to live, too, if you make the mistake of buying a house in North St. Paul. Read the blog and see how you will live.

7:00 PM: No smoke.

7:50 PM: A very faint wood smoke is in the air.

8:05 PM: Faint wood smoke.

9:05 PM: Moderate wood smoke. It is very smoky now. It will only get worse as darkness falls.

10:45 PM: Moderate wood smoke continues.

Midnight: Moderate wood smoke continues.

The air was smoky past 5 AM Saturday morning. We were not able to open the windows until 7 AM. The wood smoke pollution was not as heavy as it has been the past few weekends. We only endured very smoky air instead of the extremely smoky air I expected which is more normal on the weekends. But the smoke lasted an awful long time. Which condition is better? Extremely smoky air for a few hours or very smoky air for 8 hours?

If you make the mistake of buying a house in North St. Paul, MN, this is how you are going to live. Wood smoke is a problem throughout most of the city and not limited to our neighborhood. Burners have all the rights in this town. They can legally burn from 4 PM to 11 PM every night of the week and you can do nothing about it. And you can see from this blog that the burning continues well into the morning hours.

Thursday 06/23/2011 Air Pollution

We endured a little smoke for a few minutes this evening. It was not as bad as I thought it would be with the past two nights too rainy to burn. Tonight was a little cool for bonfires.

5:00 PM: No smoke. 62 degrees, cloudy.

6:00 PM: Light wood and possibly yard waste smoke shortly before and after this time. It did not last very long, not more than a few minutes. We got a bit of smoke intermittently as the breeze blew our direction then shifted. I am not sure where it was coming from. It seemed to be coming out of the east from the next block of homes. The breeze was shifting directions too much to tell.

There was no more wood or yard waste smoke this evening. Thankfully. It was a little cool for bonfires. There are not too many bonfires during the week when temperatures are this cool. You will usually find a few on the weekends with drunks having loud parties.

Wednesday 06/22/2011 Air Pollution

6:00 PM: No wood or yard waste smoke yet. The rain is forecast to start any time now. We are hoping for plenty of rain tonight to prevent the wood burners from polluting our air. It is supposed to rain until midnight. If the forecast holds, we will enjoy another night of fresh, unpolluted air. Hoping for rain.

There was no wood or yard waste smoke pollution this night. The rain started around 7 PM. It was still raining after 3 AM, a little drizzle at that time. We did something we almost are never able to do in this town. We slept with the windows open. It was nice!

Tuesday 06/21/2011 Air Pollution

There was no wood or yard waste smoke this evening because of heavy rain. It was raining heavily after 4 PM in North St. Paul. I was worried that someone would burn some yard waste during a break in the rain between 4:30 and 8:30 PM but nobody did. It is common for people to burn during breaks in the rain or right before the rain starts. There was a tornado watch for the Twin Cities. By 8:30 PM it was raining again with a thunderstorm and heavy rain by 9 PM. It was a great evening for fresh air. North St. Paul is a much nicer place to live when the air isn't smoky.

Star Tribune article about bonfire smoke

Here is a link to an article on the Star Tribune website about wood smoke from bonfires by Carol Dines. You may wish to read the comments section to witness the bully mentality of wood burners. There is a comment poster called holtjan who claims he or she lives in the city down in the Tower Park neighborhood. holtjan, in my opinion, possesses one of the most abrasive, mean personalities I have ever encountered online. This mean, bully personality trait is common among the small minority of wood burners amongst us polluting our precious air. Mean and nasty. Being an asshole must be a prerequisite to become an air polluting bonfire burner. It has to be because the rest of us are concerned about how our actions affect those around us.

One person's back-yard burn is others' bane

To holtjan: I hope you visit my blog again and I hope you mention it to your neighbors. If you search Google for any combination of the name of the city of North St. Paul you will find that this blog has a placement on the front page of the search results. I've had something approaching 20,000 visitors in the past two years or so to this blog, and that's with this blog not being updated during the winter months. I would like more locals to visit. So please, mention this blog to your neighbors, holtjan.

The Star Tribune comment moderators did not post a comment I made containing some text and a link to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's hazards of wood smoke page. So I will post my unpublished comment here along with another comment I made just in case it is not published.

Submitted at 10:37 PM by nspresident and not published:

Asthma attacks, heart problems, and other medical issues can be triggered by wood smoke. Don't believe me? Here's a link from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. "Wood smoke contains a hazardous mixture of chemical substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dioxin, and inhalable particulate matter (PM). Some of the VOCs are irritating, toxic, and/or cancer causing. One of the biggest human health threats from smoke, indoors or outdoors, comes from PM. Wood smoke PM is composed of wood tars, gases, soot, and ashes. Most of the particulate matter in wood smoke is smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter. These are called “fine particles” or PM2.5. Their small size allows them to go deep into the lungs. Some of the toxic chemicals from wood smoke combine with the fine particles and are also carried deeper into the lungs. Fine particles can trigger respiratory problems such as asthma attacks and even heart problems. Fine particles are considered especially dangerous for young children with developing lungs, the elderly, and people of all ages who have asthma, bronchitis, other respiratory problems, and cardiovascular disease." http://www.pca.state.mn.us/index.php/air/air-quality-and-pollutants/general-air-quality/wood-smoke/health-effects-of-wood-smoke.html?menuid=&redirect=1

My next comment currently awaiting moderation submitted at 11:37 PM:

@holtjan: To say you have an abrasive personality would be an understatement. You are insulting with every breath. You are typical of the BULLY mentality of wood burners who enjoy being a nuisance to hundreds of people. Why such a bad attitude? I have written about the Tower Park neighborhood in the past years and yes, it can be quite smoky over there, but no match for where we live (put "tower" in the search box at the top of the blog to find posts about that area). You like the smoke, do you? I doubt that very much. Because if you do like it, perhaps I could buy your neighbors an entire summer's supply of wood to burn? Would you like that? Tell your neighbors to email me and ask for some FREE firewood and maybe I'll buy them some to make sure you have smoky air ALL summer long. Also, holtjan, there was NO bonfire burning years ago. None. There was no bonfire burning in 1997, and there probably was none in 1990 (I've been told there was none as far back as the 1970s). Not once did we have to close the windows because of smoky air in the late 1990s. Not once. And tell your neighbors about my blog. May your nights be filled with wood smoke so heavy it burns your sinuses and irritates your eyes. Thank you and have a nice night.

holtjan, if you wish to discuss this further with me, you can email me at the address found on this page. I will be happy to post your emails to me on this blog so we can have a discussion on the issue should you be willing to leave your insulting, bully attitude behind. Once more, please tell your neighbors down in Tower Park about this blog. Not all of them love smoky air as much as you do I will wager.

I have been maintaining this blog for over three years now. This is not something I do because I enjoy it. It's something I do so others can see how we are forced to live in this hell called North St. Paul. I did not think this wood smoke problem would last as long as it has. Everything on this blog is what we experience in North St. Paul, MN. Your experience may vary, and it very well may be much worse.

Monday 06/20/2011 Air Pollution

It could be a beautiful evening if the air remains smoke-free. But living in North St. Paul, MN, the most polluted city in the world, that is not likely.

6:00 PM: No wood or yard waste smoke yet. Enjoying that fresh air! Going to sit outside for a while until the wood smoke starts. And it will. It's always smoky in North St. Paul. 76 degrees, cloudy. Rain is in the forecast for later this evening.

7:00 PM: No smoke.

7:50 PM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is in the air.

8:05 PM: Very faint grass smoke. There is someone illegally burning grass in the distance. It's not very strong but it is enough to smell it inside the house.

8:25 PM: Very faint grass smoke continues.

9:00 PM: No smoke.

10:10 PM: No smoke. Fresh air. No rain yet.

Midnight: No wood smoke. Fresh air! No rain yet.

I was surprised that all we had for smoky air tonight was a tiny bit of grass smoke around the 8 PM hour. What possible reason could there be for the absence of wood smoke tonight? Is it because it was forecast to rain this evening? No. There was rain in the forecast for last Friday evening and it did not discourage the burning. Could it be the wind pattern? The wind is out of the east and north this evening, different from the usual west to east pattern. But we get hit with wood smoke no matter which way the wind blows. Maybe we just got lucky. That happens once every blue moon in North St. Paul.

You have to savor every little bit of fresh air you get in this polluted nightmare of a city.

Sunday 06/19/2011 Air Pollution

1:00 PM: No smoke. I can see smoke rising in the distance from the property of a frequent burner. But we could not smell it on our property. Burning this early, I guess he is burning yard waste.

4:30 PM: No smoke. The frequent burner is burning again. We cannot smell it down here. The wind is not coming our direction, thankfully. Sunny, 75 degrees.

5:30 PM: Still no smoke.

6:10 PM: A faint smoke of some type is in the air. It is not wood, it is not grass, it is not food being grilled. I do not know what it is. The windows have been closed.

6:40 PM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is still in the air.

7:15 PM: A faint smoke of unknown type still is in the air. It did not last long beyond this.

There was no more smoke in the air for the rest of the night.

Saturday 06/18/2011 Air Pollution

There was no yard waste burning today. It rained off and on most of the afternoon.

4:55 PM: No smoke. Light rain falling at this time. 70 degrees.

7:30 PM: Faint to light wood smoke at this time. The rain stopped and yes, smoky air again. It did not last too long.

8:30 PM: No smoke.

There was no more smoke for the rest of the night.

Friday 06/17/2011 Air Pollution

There is a possible thunderstorm in the forecast for tonight. The bad news is that it is not expected to reach the Twin Cities until around midnight. That means tonight is going to be a smoky hell. And it was.

4:15 PM: Very faint grass smoke is blowing in on the breeze. Someone is burning yard waste again. Could the same home be burning yard waste over multiple days? There is a pattern of yard waste burning at this time of day. The smoke was not strong enough to close the windows and it did not last very long. I thought it funny because at this time I was replying to an email sent to me.

5:30 PM: No smoke. 82 degrees and cloudy.

6:30 PM: No smoke. The air is nice and fresh.

7:00 PM: No smoke.

7:55 PM: Faint wood smoke coming and going with the breeze.

8:25 PM: No smoke.

10:00 PM: Moderate to strong wood smoke. Extremely smoky air! You cannot breathe this toxic poison filling our air. You get sick to your stomach! Two homes within a block or so of us are burning wood right now and the heavy smoke is blanketing the area. I think one is burning brush that they had piled in their fire pit. It is going to be a long smoky night.

10:35 PM: Moderate to strong wood smoke continues. Thunder can be heard at this time. A thunderstorm is moving in.

11:00 PM: No smoke at this time.

11:15 PM: Faint to light wood smoke. The clouds are flashing with lightning like a strobe light.

Midnight: No smoke. A few drops of rain have started to fall.

We woke up to fresh air because it rained. Without the rain, we would have woken to smoky smoldering air like we have the past two weekends.

Thursday 06/16/2011 Air Pollution

Another night, more smoky air.

5:00 PM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is in the air. I do not know what it is. 75 degrees, sunny, gorgeous. Windows are open all over the house.

8:00 PM: No smoke yet.

9:00 PM: No smoke.

10:00 PM: Very faint wood smoke blowing in on the breeze. Yes, friends, the air in North St. Paul is getting smoky once again. A bonfire? Yard waste burning? Time will tell.

10:05 PM: Light wood smoke that smells like burning tree branches. It does not smell like bonfire logs. It did not take long for the smoke to gain intensity. Every night the air is smoky in North St. Paul.

10:50 PM: Light wood or whatever smoke continues. No chance of going to bed with the windows open tonight.

When I woke at 1 AM there was still faint wood smoke in the air. This is how the city of North St. Paul makes its citizens live.

Wednesday 06/15/2011 Air Pollution

Another night, more smoky air. I thought we were going to make it through the night without any smoke pollution. I was wrong. I should have known better.

4:45 PM: No smoke, 73 degrees.

6:00 PM: No smoke. Light rain for a few minutes. 66 degrees.

6:30 PM: No smoke. Sunny at this time.

8:00 PM: No smoke. Sunny.

9:00 PM: No smoke. Sunny.

10:00 PM: No smoke.

11:00 PM: No smoke.

11:15 PM: Light to moderate wood or tree branch smoke. I do not know what is being burned but it is not wood logs for a bonfire. Go to bed with the windows closed as always. North St. Paul sucks!

Tuesday 06/14/2011 Air Pollution

A couple of homes around here had to sneak in some yard waste burning before the rain came. This happens often. When the rain approaches, the yard waste burners hurriedly do their thing and we get to breathe the smoke. Sometimes they even try to continue burning as the rain starts to fall. You can imagine how good that smells.

4:25 PM: Faint grass and wood smoke at this time. There is a pattern of yard waste burning around this time. 77 degrees and cloudy.

5:00 PM: Light to moderate grass and brush smoke. It reeks! It is coming from a different direction than the earlier burning. That makes two yard waste burners hitting us with smoke.

5:30 PM: No smoke. A rain sprinkle has started. Rolling thunder can be heard off in the distance.

6:15 PM: No smoke. Raining now. 64 degrees. The temperature dropped quite a bit.

There was no more smoke this evening. It rained most of the evening.

Monday 06/13/2011 Air Pollution

4:45 PM: Very faint grass smoke at this time. Someone off in the distance is illegally burning grass. Again. 75 degrees and sunny.

8:30 PM: No smoke yet. Cloudy now.

9:00 PM: No smoke.

10:00 PM: No smoke.

10:26 PM: Very faint wood smoke is coming in out of the east varying with the breeze. Someone has a bonfire going out there. Could be a quarter to a half mile from us.

11:00 PM: No smoke.

11:15 PM: No smoke. Go to bed with the windows closed as always. You never know when someone is going to do some late night burning in this screwy city.

Sunday 06/12/2011 Air Pollution

12:35 AM: Moderate to strong wood smoke continues. You can still taste the wood smoke in the air. 59 degrees, it seems a little humid, and the air is a little hazy from the wood smoke.

2:00 AM: Moderately strong wood smoke continues. No chance of opening the windows for hours.

4:00 AM: Light wood smoke continues. This is why we have to sleep with the windows closed every night in this horrible city! North St. Paul sucks!

6:00 AM: Faint wood smoke continues.

8:00 AM: A very faint smoldering smokiness lingers in the air. Do you want to live in a city like this?

There was no yard waste burning all afternoon.

5:05 PM: Faint wood smoke at this time.

5:30 PM: Light wood smoke at this time. There are two homes near us burning wood at around this time. That's why the air is smoky!

5:56 PM: Very faint wood smoke at this time.

6:30 PM: Faint wood smoke. 67 degrees and cloudy. KARE 11 puts the Twin Cities temperature at 61 degrees but it feels warmer than that.

7:10 PM: Very faint wood smoke continues.

8:10 PM: No wood smoke.

I went out around this time and smelled wood smoke over at Silver Lake beach. I tracked it down 19th. The smoke was getting heavy at Henry St. I expected to find the burner on Reardon, an off-white house that has a metal wood smoke contraption in their backyard visible from the street. I once tracked smoke to that house from a half mile away. But it wasn't that house. It was on 18th at Reardon. I could smell that smoke way over by Silver Lake beach.

It wasn't much of a bonfire. It was more smoke with a tiny bit of flames. There was a 25-foot high column of smoke rising and gently floating to the northwest. It was very smoky.

Whoever was having that smoky bonfire, thank you for polluting the air. Me and everyone else along Silver Lake really enjoyed breathing your wood smoke pollution. Next time, you may actually want some flames to go with your smoke.

9:20 PM: The air is not fresh at this time. I cannot smell smoke but there is something in it.

10:00 PM: No detectable smoke but the air is not fresh. Last check of the evening. 62 degrees. Go to bed with the windows closed as usual.

Saturday 06/11/2011 Air Pollution

Wood smoke so heavy you can taste it. It was an extremely smoky night with smoldering smoke that lasted well into the daylight hours Sunday morning. There was a smoky haze in the air this night. But as smoky as it was, it does get worse in North St. Paul, MN.

11:40 AM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is in the air. Somebody is burning something.

3:10 PM: Very faint grass smoke. Somebody is burning yard waste. This is the worst year ever for yard waste burning. It just gets worse every year.

4:45 PM: Very faint grass smoke still. 65 degrees.

5:45 PM: Faint wood smoke from a frequent burner making its way over here. He was burning earlier but we were spared due to wind patterns. Close the windows.

6:10 PM: Faint to light wood smoke. Getting stronger.

7:04 PM: Very faint smoke now coming from a different direction. The smoke smells different from the prior smoke so I know it is from a different source. No matter which way the wind blows, we get hit with smoke pollution.

7:20 PM: Faint wood smoke.

8:00 PM: No smoke. 67 degrees, sunny.

8:25 PM: A very faint smokiness of some type is in the air.

8:45 PM: No smoke.

9:25 PM: Very faint wood smoke at this time.

9:55 PM: Light to moderate wood smoke. The air is pretty smoky at this time. This is only a teaser. The smoke gets much worse. This is common in North St. Paul, MN.

10:30 PM: Moderate wood smoke. Very smoky right now.

10:45 PM: Moderate to strong wood smoke. It is extremely smoky now. It does get worse in the city of North St. Paul. There is one higher category than this.

11:15 PM: Moderate to strong wood smoke. I can taste the wood smoke in the air! The air is so smoky you can taste it.

Midnight: Moderate to strong wood smoke continues. The air is hazy from wood smoke. And I can still taste the smoke in the air.

A faint smoldering smokiness lingered in the air until past 8 AM Sunday morning. This is how city council members Jan Walczak, Bob Bruton, and Terry Furlong make us live. They have refused to do anything about the smoke pollution in this town and sided with the burners.

Friday 06/10/2011 Air Pollution

We are almost never able to sleep with the windows open at night because of the damn wood smoke in this city. If it isn't smoky when you go to bed, somebody could start a late night bonfire and smoke up your house terrible. Breathing heavy wood smoke when you are trying to sleep is very unpleasant. This has happened more times than we would have liked.

2:15 AM: Faint to light wood smoke at this time. I checked the air when I had to get out of bed. The air is smokier now than it was at midnight. A little rain is just starting to fall around this time. This makes about 10 hours of wood or grass smoke in the air.

5:00 PM: No wood smoke. 60 degrees and cloudy. Rain is in the forecast for tonight. The rain is forecast to arrive between 8 and 9 PM. If the cool temperature doesn't discourage bonfire wood smoke, the rain should. If luck goes our way and it actually rains. If it doesn't rain, it will likely be another smoky evening in North St. Paul, MN.

7:00 PM: No wood smoke yet. 60 degrees and cloudy.

Yes, somebody did some burning right before it rained.

Thursday 06/09/2011 Air Pollution

The air pollution nightmare gets worse every year. Burning is starting earlier now than ever. By 5:45 PM two homes nearby were burning. As darkness arrives bonfires will start. If you make the mistake of buying a house in North St. Paul, MN, this is how you are going to live, too. This horrible air pollution is not confined to our neighborhood. The air is smoky all over the city. It keeps getting worse.

4:25 PM: Faint grass smoke. It's already starting.

4:55 PM: Light grass smoke. 66 degrees. Do you want to breathe grass smoke inside your home at the end of the day? You probably don't.

5:07 PM: Light wood smoke now. Grass followed by wood, I am pretty sure I know who is doing the burning. So I went out and found out that my hunch was correct. This frequent burner was burning grass last night, too. On the way back I was driving down a street and heard a crackling noise. I went around the block and found another home was burning. I do not know what they were burning. I could see flames from behind the garage.

There are two homes in the area burning before 6 PM. If it is smoky now, how bad is it going to get as the sun sets?

6:00 PM: Faint to light wood smoke. I hate North St. Paul!

7:00 PM: Light wood smoke continues and will likely continue for hours. Then the bonfires start.

Is this how you want to live? If not, do not purchase real estate in North St. Paul. When we moved here there was never any wood smoke and yard waste burning was infrequent. Now it is a nightmare.

7:45 PM: No smoke. The air is fresh.

8:00 PM: Faint wood smoke. The breeze must have shifted direction temporarily.

8:30 PM: Light wood smoke.

9:40 PM: Faint wood smoke varying with the breeze. This wood smoke smells different than that of earlier. It seems to be coming from a different direction. So many people burn these days the wood smoke comes at us from every which way.

10:30 PM: Very faint wood smoke varying with the breeze. A little rain drizzle fell shortly after this time. Not enough to stop the wood smoke unfortunately for all of us.

Midnight: Faint wood smoke continues shortly after midnight.

The air was smoky all night long. When I woke at around 2:15 AM the wood smoke was a little heavier than it was at midnight. This is why we almost never go to sleep with the windows open. This is also why almost everyone in the neighborhood runs their air conditioner on cool summer nights. The air is so damn smoky you cannot stand to breathe it! Do you want to breathe smoky air in bed at night? Nobody does.

Wednesday 06/08/2011 Air Pollution

I found five burners within a quarter mile of our home this evening when I went out prior to sunset. One was burning grass and the other four were burning wood. Some of the burning that would have normally taken place the prior two days happened this evening. An uncharacteristic north to south wind pattern prevented us from getting much smoke here.

4:15 PM: Faint grass smoke at this time. Sunny, 77 degrees and windy. It did not last more than a few minutes.

5:00 PM: No smoke.

6:00 PM: No smoke.

7:00 PM: No smoke.

8:00 PM: No smoke. Still windy.

8:25 PM: Faint grass and wood smoke varying with the breeze. It comes and goes. It is windy at this time. The wind is not blowing our direction but some smoke makes it our way. I went out and found the yard waste burner. Then I found four more burners within a quarter mile of us. One bonfire was about 5 feet high and another small bonfire produced smoke I could smell a quarter mile south of the source.

If it isn't raining or too hot or cold, you will find people burning every evening in the neighborhood. Wood, grass, paper, other wastes, they burn whatever they can get their hands on.

9:30 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke is in the air at our house. It is not strong enough to require the closure of windows. 66 degrees. Most homes have their windows open today.

10:30 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke continues. Last check of the evening.

Tuesday 06/07/2011 Air Pollution

There was no wood or yard waste smoke due to record-breaking heat. It was 102 degrees in North St. Paul at 4:30 PM. The high for the Twin Cities hit 103 degrees this day.

Monday 06/06/2011 Air Pollution

There was no wood or yard waste smoke this evening. High heat and humidity discouraged our many wood and yard waste burners from doing their thing. The temperature at 5 PM was 93 degrees. The high for the Twin Cities hit 97 degrees, a new record.

Sunday 06/05/2011 Air Pollution

The North St. Paul nightmare never ends. It goes to rest for 10 or 12 hours and then comes screaming back. Mornings like today, it doesn't go to sleep at all. It lingers all day, tormenting anyone with windows open.

6:00 AM: Faint smoldering wood smoke is in the air varying with the breeze. A great way to top off an evening of extremely heavy wood and waste smoke: with a smoldering wood smoke chaser.

I went out to find the source of the smoldering wood. I found it about a quarter mile away. I could not determine which house was producing the smoke. There are two homes for sale within a block. If a house in that area was responsible for last night's extremely heavy smoke, I feel sorry for the poor souls who buy those homes.

9:20 AM: A faint smoldering smoke comes and goes with the breeze.

11:00 AM: A varying faint smoldering smoke continues.

1:30 PM: The faint smoldering smoke continues coming in on the breeze.

1:40 PM: Light grass smoke. Now somebody is burning yard waste. It did not last long.

5:05 PM: Faint to light wood smoke coming in on the breeze. It varies.

6:25 PM: Very faint wood smoke.

7:30 PM: No smoke.

There was no more wood smoke for the rest of the night.

Saturday 06/04/2011 Air Pollution

It was an evening straight out of hell in North St. Paul, MN. Burning grass, burning wood, burning paper, a chemical odor, more burning wood and burning that smelled like a house fire is what we were treated to courtesy of the idiots on the city council (Bob Bruton, Jan Walczak, Terry Furlong, and whoever the new guy is who won Dave Zick's seat) who make us breathe this toxic polluted air. To start things, we had to endure smoldering remnants of the prior evening's burning.

6:30 AM: Faint smoldering wood smoke is in the air. What a way to wake up first thing in the morning. North St. Paul is a horrible place to live.

5:00 PM: No smoke yet. Nobody burned yard waste yet today, which is unusual for this town. 83 degrees and sunny, a beautiful summer day.

7:00 PM: No smoke yet.

7:45 PM: A very faint trace of some type of smoke is in the air.

8:05 PM: Very faint to faint grass smoke. Somewhere somebody is illegally burning yard waste. Again. This is the worst year for yard waste burning since we have lived in this shitty nightmare city.

8:15 PM: Light to moderate wood smoke. Very smoky air on a beautiful evening to sit outside. Isn't that nice?

8:45 PM: Moderate wood smoke and paper or cardboard smoke. It's a shame that North St. Paul is such a horrible place to live because the temperature is dropping and it would be nice to open the windows! 75 degrees at this time.

9:15 PM: Moderate paper or cardboard smoke. Somebody is burning waste. Again.

9:40 PM: Now there is a smoky chemical smell in the air. What kind of toxic waste is being burned now? This city is run by idiots! I would have never in my wildest nightmares thought that any city would force its citizens to breathe air pollution like this. Welcome to North St. Paul, MN, Hell on Earth.

10:00 PM: Moderate wood smoke that smells like a burning house. This is not just logs being burned. The air is cool outside. We should be able to open the windows but will not be able to until morning. I hate this city.

11:00 PM: Moderate to strong wood smoke and something that smells like a burning house. Extremely smoky. I wish city council member Bob Bruton would read this blog. I would love to tell him what an asshole he is for making us breathe this polluted air. He supports this burning. He told me so in an email. Even with all the windows closed the smoke is still getting in. You are an asshole, Bob.

Midnight: Moderate to strong wood and whatever else is being burned smoke. It is going to be a long, smoky night in North St. Paul.

The air was smoky all night long and a smoldering smokiness could be smelled in the air beyond noon Sunday morning.

Do you want to live in a city like this?

Friday 06/03/2011 Air Pollution

A Friday with no rain and as usual the air is smoky. Do you want to buy a home in a city where you will be breathing smoky air in bed every night if you open the windows? North St. Paul sucks. It's a horrible place to live.

5:00 PM: No smoke. 88 degrees and humid. The official high temperature for today in the Twin Cities was 92 degrees.

5:50 PM: Light grass smoke at this time. More illegal yard waste burning. I think this year is the worst ever for yard waste burning.

6:00 PM: Light wood smoke. Now some wood smoke added to the yard waste burning. Do you want to live in a city like this?

6:30 PM: No smoke.

7:00 PM: No smoke.

8:00 PM: No smoke.

8:40 PM: Very faint wood smoke is in the air at this time. It comes and goes with the breeze.

9:00 PM: No smoke.

9:45 PM: No smoke. 81 degrees.

10:10 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke is in the air at this time.

10:30 PM: Faint wood smoke.

11:00 PM: No smoke.

11:45 PM: Light wood smoke at this time. No way we can leave the windows open to cool the house tonight. North St. Paul sucks!

Thursday 06/02/2011 Air Pollution

5:15 PM: No smoke yet. 73 degrees, mostly sunny, breezy, and gorgeous. This will be a beautiful evening if the air does not become smoky.

7:00 PM: No smoke. Cloudy.

8:45 PM: No smoke.

10:00 PM: No smoke.

11:20 PM: A very faint trace of wood smoke is in the air. Not enough smoke to close the windows.

There was no real wood smoke in the air this evening. Sometimes we get lucky in North St. Paul. Not often.

Wednesday 06/01/2011 Air Pollution

There was no wood or yard waste smoke this evening. Not even a trace. The fresh air was wonderful! Spent some time relaxing outside. Lilacs and tree blossoms are starting to disappear. Nature's floral perfume will soon be gone. It was nice to enjoy it for an evening. The temperature was 74 degrees at 5 PM. It was sunny and gorgeous. It was cloudy by 7 PM.

You will never appreciated the importance of fresh air until you live in a polluted hell like North St. Paul, Minnesota. When you get a nice evening without smoky air you must savor it. It could be the last evening of fresh air you enjoy for weeks.

Tuesday 05/31/2011 Air Pollution

More yard waste and wood burning this evening.

5:00 PM: There is a very faint trace of some type of smoke in the air. It is not strong enough to determine its type. 71 degrees, mostly cloudy and very windy at this time.

6:55 PM: Light grass and wood smoke varying with the wind. The house smells like burning grass now. Do you want the inside of your home smelling like burning grass? It is still very windy at this time but that is not enough to discourage yard waste burners in this city. Close the windows.

7:10 PM: Light wood smoke at this time. There is only one household I know of that burns wood with yard waste. I do not know if that house is the culprit and I am not driving around to check.

7:30 PM: No smoke. The burning stopped or the wind shifted direction. It is very windy and the wind blows every which direction.

There was no more wood or yard waste smoke this evening. Thankfully. We slept with the windows open tonight. That's a huge risk in North St. Paul because it is not uncommon for someone to start a bonfire late at night. Waking up a 1 AM to a house reeking of wood smoke is not pleasant. That has happened to us more times than it should have. North St. Paul is a horrible place to live.
